Beaverdam Work Center Day 8

day 8 - 5/23/08start - beaverdam workcenter
hwy 12 mileage- 60 miles
After a short day yesterday and a beautiful night of rest, we woke up to a light rain this morning. So I made some hot oatmeal with flaxseeds and raisins and started the packing gig. Then it starts to snow outside, and not just a light snow, but rather a thick, sticky snow blowing all over the place. Therefore we decided to huddle in the tarps a bit longer, waiting for it either to blow over or for a report from the nearby ranger station. It's about 8:30 now and the rangers don't seem to have gotten up yet. Perhaps they'll invite us in for a hot cup of joe while the snow blows through- a bit of wishful thinking, but why not be retardly optimistic in this situation. The snow defintely bothers me a bit, it makes me rather concerned about our northern migration and especially the high elevations in Colorado. I'm hoping we're able to get through without too many problems. Word has it has it that the passes still have anywhere from 5 to 10 feet on them. But I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. It's about time to start packing up the gear and begin the day with a little riding in the snow. Yay! I'm just hoping a little bit of sun comes out later to warm up our little bodies and dry the gear. We'll see what happens. Bike on.Well we started out in the snow this morning and all was going well with the cold driving rain/sleet until we hit the mega muck. This mud seemed like it was its destiny to build up all over the bikes until it wasn't even possible to turn the wheels. It looked like this god forsaken mud would continue for miles, so we cut across a field hoping the road would come out on the other side. Well it did, but the field was just as bad to move the bikes through- go figure. So after an hour or two of frustrations, and getting rained on and pounded by wind, two jeeps pulled up with bike racks on them- saviors! We got them to stop and help to transport to a spot where the mud wasn't so hellacious. Super nice guys- their website is www.membersofthebored.com- so check them out if you've got time. They were just driving around in their having a good time. Much thanks to the kind souls that have helped out so far in this trip. So after that little entanglement, we continued on, trying to outrun the storm- which never seems to work. We eventually made it Hwy 12, cold, wet and somewhat defeated. Luckily there was a church with an abandoned trailer at that intersection. After a ranger gave us some maps and two mre's (meal ready to go- the stuff the army guys get), we made our way to the Old Horse Springs church and squatted in their trailer. An awesome night- fire, belly full of army style chili, and sleeping on a bug-infested matress-I couldn't have been happier. A great find and it's nice to feel like a true vagrant at times. Well tomorrow we should be making our way to Pie Town, NM to eat some pie!
Stewie out.
