Departing the Desert

day 5 - 5/20/2008start - Separ, NMend - Silver City, NMmileage - ~50 miles Well we finally are starting to make some progress out of the desert, and Mark and I are pretty damn stoked about that prospect. I'm not going to lie, the last 3 days have been rather monotonous. Riding on the road in the desert is not the most exciting of things. Today we start on a dirt road for the first 30 miles or so. After climbing around 1500 feet or so, we were up on the continental divide and rode along that for a nice while. Then we dropped down to hwy 90 to finish off about 20 miles to Silver City. At least this road is rather mountainous. All in all, the riding has improved greatly and we are going to gain another 1500 feet or so tomorrow! So Silver City is an AMAZING town. As we pulled into the town, we stopped at a Chevron, I consumed a huge chocolate chip cookie accompanied with 24 oz of Arizona green tea. Not the healthiest of snacks, but effective to kick up my blood glucose. The we made our way into town to find the local bike shop-Gila Hike and Bike. The guys there are awesome and helped us out a lot. I got some slime tubes to help with the flats, some bike gloves, patch kit, and they straightened out my front brake rotor. No more rubbing! Great guys and mad props to them. Next we made our way over to the campground, got a beautiful patch of grass to sleep on- which beats the heck out of the sand we've been on for the past 4 nights- and also took the first true shower of the trip. It was, of course, incredible. Next on the agenda was a local brewery/pizzeria. It was amazing. After putting down a salad, whole pizza, and two beers- I was in quite an excellent state of mind. We also met a super nice couple from Alaska that sat near us- I love travelers, they all seem to have a great story and outlook on life. After dinner Mark and I took a little joy ride around the town and made it back to the campsite in one piece. Quite a successful night. Tomorrow we've got to run a few errands before rolling out- and then back into the beautiful mountains. The trip continues! Stewie checking out to catch some zzzzzs. Laterz.
