Day 12 - 5/27/08Start - Zuni CanyonEnd - road to Cuba (luckily)
Well we woke up early and kicked it out to Grants bright and early for a dope breakfast. After a mega cold descent, we made it into town around 7am and found El Cafecito to indulge ourselves. After an omlette, hashbrowns, toast, OJ, and a cinnamon roll- we took care of errands at the PO box, library, abd Wally World for food. Then it was time to move on around 11:30 am. We made great progress and had a hard climb above 9000 feet and then took a well deserved break. Then we descended back down, and thought we were on the right road until rancher redirected us. So we thought we were going the right way, and then nothing synced up on the map. After turning around a few time in frustrations, we were convinced we were on the right path. All we really needed was some water. There seems to be none of it in this godforsaken desert land. Well low and behold, we come out at a huge road and start moving on it, turns out to be a mining road with those freakin monster vehicles you only see on TV. Soon after we got captured by the two patrol trucks and were immediately forced to leave the road. We threw our bikes in the back of one of the trucks and were taken to the main station to refill our water, get a little lecture about how dangerous our situation was, and then we looked at the map and they tried to help us figure out where we went wrong. Then one of the guys took us back out the road we were out about 3 hours prior and showed us where we messed up, and the correct way to go. It was about 10 minutes until sunset, we rolled down the road for a minute and set up camp behind a little bump for some wind protection. With the day over, I made some super duper mac and cheese followed by hot chocolate for din-din. Some soul food to build the mojo after being lost for so long. But no worries, we'll be moving on tomorrow andshould reach Cuba within 2 days (assuming no more of these episodes). Time to catch some zzzzzzs. Laterz.
