Day 28 - 6/12/08
Start - Ludder Creek Campground End - Marshall Pass
Mileage - 65 miles
Great day today. Earlyish cold start with all of the water bottles frozen and then a freezing descent for a little down from Cochetopa Pass. The miles flowed like butter pretty much all day. We had a mega tail wind for the majority of the day that carried us right in. After being defeated yesterday by the wind gods, we were finally rewarded today. After huddling in some trees on the side of hwy 50 for lunch, we moved on to Sargents, CO- a "don't blink" kind of place. We went to the one store/restaurant there and indulged in a beautiful pie a la mode. I had the "fruits of the forest" pie and it was off the chain. Once accompanied with 2 cups of coffee we were off to climb about 2000 feet to Marshall pass at 10,872 feet. The climb was pretty chill- rather well graded, Colorado knows how to make dirt roads for' sure. Other great news- we didn't encounter any snow! A grand surprise. We're camping at the campsite just 0.2 miles away at 10,842 feet. It shall be another very cold night indeed. Tomorrow we only have like 26 miles to reach Salida- perfect to get brunch, my favorite meal ever. There's a kayaking festival this weekend with music, so we're sticking around for the day to partake in the festivities and enjoy some microbrews. That's the word.Colorado is amazing! So much better than the desert.
