Day 19 - 6/3/08
Start - after Brazos Ridge
End - along 250 on Alamosa river
Mileage - ~ 60 miels
After about 1.5 hours we finally left the snow. Funny how a stretch that would normally take 15 minutes turns into a 1.5 hour slugfest with the snow, slush, mud. But we eventually reached Hwy 17, rode over La Manga Pass at 10,230 feet and descended into Horca, CO. We reached Colorado! The scenery has changed drastically, and the mountains are superb. I guess snow and crappy conditions come at a price- also b/c Colorado got a huge amount of snow this year.

Mark and I celebrated our exit from the cactus lands of New Mexico with a meal at the one restaurant/store in Horca. Following a bean burrito with rice and pie a la mode, we made an executive decision to bag the upcoming Indiana Pass at 11,910 feet. So we found a small road that follows a river and dumps us out on hwy 15 to reach Del Norte without excessive trouble. Indiana Pass would've been the highest point of the trip, but the snow gods were having none of it. Another day perhaps.
Hopefully we make it into Del Norte, CO at a reasonable time tomorrow. We're planning to spend the day there and leave the next day for Pueblo. From Pueblo, we're bussing for 14 hours to Tulsa to take a few days off for my grandma and grandpa's 50th wedding anniversary. Should be a nice recovery time and it's always nice to see family.
Not sure on how we're getting from Del Norte to Pueblo- but hitch hiking or bussing would probably get the job done. That's the word- time to ride towards Platoro and finish out the day. Eat well, ride hard, live long.
