Day 18 - June 2, 2008
Start - Lake Hopewell
End - on 87
Mileage - 40 miles
We rolled out around our standard time of 8:30am and started progressing towards Colorado. All was going well, we had a full day of climbing ahead of us, planning to top out around 11,000 feet just a little before the Brazos Ridge Overlook. So we're climbing, and climbing, and then we ran into snow a few miles from topping out. And so the epic snow war began. At first there were 3-4 foot snow drifts to try to run the bikes over- and later it turned into just huge fields of snow. A bit of a disaster for the bicycles.
#1 Bikes do not ride in the snow.
#2 The snow accumulates and wheels dont't turn.
#3 Cold.
#4 Wet
#5 Slow

So after lunch we progressed maybe about 10 miles in 6 hours- not the best of a pace. We didn't get all of the way out of the snow, and camped out around 8:30pm when it was starting to get dark, determined to start the fight again tomorrow. Definitly a bit of a shock to run into that quantity of snow immediately- and makes me rather worried for the hight mountains of Colorado. A few detours are certainly in store. But it'll work out. Tomorrow we're hopefully going to escape the grasp of the snow gods and start rolling at a normal pace. We'll see how it goes. Until then, I will sleep like a rock.
Stewie out.
