Day 54 - 7/9/08
Start - Continental Divide
End - Huckleberry Pass
Mileage - 51 miles
Started the day with a nice descent from the continental divide. Then began a truly hellacious 2000 foot climb up to some unnamed summit. It rather sucked and the single speed forces me to walk a few times. Well I guess I wasn't forced, but walking sounded like a better option blowing out my knees or any tendons. So that's how it went. Just after the top we stopped at an old dilapidated cabin for lunch and a little nap. Then we embarked on quite possibly the best descent of the whole trip. Technical enough to keep your interest and smooth enough to not jar your brains out of the head. Sweet creek crossings and muddy water pools put the icing on the cake. Then we rolled into Lincoln, MT.On the way down there was an old guy on oxygen with a glorified golf cart that had decided to stop working at the bottom of his driveway. He got us to stop and explained his situation, then gave me a friggin' one hundred dollar bill to find a tow truck in town to help him out. Interesting. So we rolled down to Lincoln, I found the tow truck company, called them, and then had to ride back the way I came to bring them the $100 smackers. Small town stuff. Lincoln is a nice place. Had everything we needed. Used the internet at the library and then hit the "grocery store". I asked the lady is they carried tofu and she replied "Son, do you have any idea where exactly you are?" I just love small town America to death. Next was pizza. A great handmade pizza place attached to a bar. I practiced some extreme self control and only ate half of the pizza, due to the fact that we planned to climb another 16 miles following the consumption fest. The pizzawas awesome, the climb went well, and now I'm surrounded by mosquitoes at the top of Huckleberry Pass. A great day. On to Seeley Lake tomorrow to retrieve a package and hopefully hit a little bit of swimming! Night-night.
