Day 53 - 7/8/08
Start - near Basin, MT
End - Continental Divide Crossing
Mileage - ~58 miles
The first full day since taking time off in Bozeman, and it feels really good to be back on the trail. We rolled into Basin nice and early to hit the diner with the supposedly humungus breakfast burritos. Mark decided to forge ahead with the burrito while I played the vagabond role and ate my own granola. The burrito was in fact mega huge- taking up the whole plate. Mark, noble Mark, downed the thing without hesitating- quite impressive. Then we off to climb. We had two pretty large climbs today and crossed the continental divide twice. We're camping out at the top of the second crossing now with a great view and mosquito free- thank dios. There was a section of trail that was probably the burliest we've encountered on the trip. Kinda like super rough singletrack, which sucks with 30 lbs of gear in the panniers, but we persevered. Marky-Mark lost a chaco sandal today, a bit of bummer. I was always worried about them not being strapped on through one of the sandal straps, but c'est la vie. He'll work it out. The sections we're in now are rather remote. Great scenery, few towns, and the gumption are soaring. Too bad there's less than two weeks left, a bit of a bummer, but what can you do. The adventure will always continue in some way, I can only hope. I guess med school is a bit of an adventure and it is most certainly more grueling than riding a mountain bike 3000 miles through the Rockies. That's the way I like to run my life at this point in time, so it all works out. Rather deep stuff huh? I guess that's what a sip or two of whiskey can do to ya. Read time and then nighty-night. Peace.
