Day 20 - 6/4/08
Start - Alamosa River
End - Del Norte, CO
Mileage - ~40 miles
We woke up in a nice frost this mornig, with all of the bottles frozen- a very nice time. The cold spurred on an early departure time from the campsite and we made it down to hwy 15 around 10 am. We had to by pass Indiana Pass due to snow, so that made for about 30 miles of road riding- not very ideal for a single speed, but spinning like a DJ is my business, so it works out.
We ended up getting into Del Norte, CO around lunch time and went over to Gary and Patti's house- two trail angels that help take care of the haggard bikers rolling through town. Super nice folk and Gary also has a bike shop there. I had some repairs in store for the "uncus", my stallion of choice for this ride. The rear brake died due to a mess of mud/ice, and also my wheel has been severely out of true for awhile. Uncus got cleaned and lubes- and is now ready to ride, squeak free!
We hung out for the day and feasted on some well needed produce. Naps, reading, and talking with Patti and Gary was also in order. A very rejuvenating day. Gary is another true bike addict- it was cool to his bike collection, especially his 29er Voodoo singlespeed. Patti made us omelettes for breakfast with red chile on top- it was scrumptious! Red chile here does not mean a bowl of beans...- it really just refers to a red sauce that goes on top of things. Regardless, it was great.
We also found a local brewery to partake in out first Coloradan beer. The brewery is called Three Barrells, and we tried his IPA. It was spectacular- with a magnificent bite, but not too bitter. I also had my first experience with a beer container known as a "pig". It is a 2.5 gallon bomb looking thing- pretty interesting. But the beer flowed nicely and went down like water.
Tomorrow we start the migration to Tulsa to visit family for a few days. We've got pretty much all day to catch an 8:45 pm bus from Pueblo. So the journey moves east from Del Norte to Tulsa, and then back in 5 days to resume the northward migration. Bike on!
